Make is printing the process return code from the previous command executed. In this case, that was avr-objcopy which printed some error about invalid arguments. When a command succeeds, it returns 0 (for success). If something goes wrong, it return a non-zero value which causes make to print an error message.

So the real problem is to figure out why avr-objcopy is failing. Unfortunately, I don't use WinAVR myself so I can't tell what's wrong from that command line. Maybe someone else here could help you with that.

I would suggest you to try the make process without the VMLAB intervention (command line), and see if your installation is missing some file, environment variable, etc.
